Winter Tips to Keep Your Home Cozy & Warm

Since we’re spending so much time at home, we might as well make it a place we want to be!

Start with Hygge

You may have come across the word “hygge" (pronounced hoo-ga) over the past few years, but this Danish home concept may be hard to understand for some people. It cannot be defined by a single word - its actually more of a feeling of comfort. Its literal translation is “a form of everyday togetherness”. Picture a cozy, well-made bed that’s layered with pillows & blankets, with a cup of hot chocolate and your favorite book, with a roaring fire in the background.

There are a lot of elements that may embrace hygge, but it really just comes down to creating a warm and welcoming - peaceful environment in your home. The nice thing about it  - you don't need a  huge home to achieve it. Actually, some of the most "hygge-filled" spaces are smaller spaces.

Remember That Less Is More

This trend is partly about utilizing the things that bring you happiness and joy. If you have a small living space that doesn't have room for a lot of furniture, you can embrace hygge by focusing on simple palettes of color and minimalist furniture. Hygge is achieved once everything feels right, focusing only on the important elements.

Create Instant Hygge with Candles

One of the easiest ways to create a sense of hygge is with your favorite scented candles. This is essential to creating your cozy, hygge home. Candles are one of the easiest ways to add warmth to any size space. You can arrange them on a bookshelf, a coffee table, or even around a drawn bath.

A Cozy Book Nook

Having a special place to read a good book is another essential element of hygge. It's a great way to encourage reading by creating your own reading nook! Once again, a large space is not needed to create a reading area, and it adds to the overall comfortable feeling in your home.

Drapes w/help with draft and creates a cozy look

Draperies are often overlooked, because so many homeowners choose to use blinds on their windows. While blinds are good to use for privacy, they don't really add a cozy feeling to the home. A nice set of draperies can be easily paired with your blinds to create hygge. The softer feeling of the drapes adds a comfortable feeling, even when they are open. A bonus with drapes is the literal warmth that they can bring in the cold weather. That extra layer of material will often minimize a drafty window!

Comfy Bedding

Your bedding should be comfortable and cozy - but definitely uncluttered. You can add layer upon layer of fresh bedding, while keeping it neat.  You can incorporate the hygge experience in your bedroom in two simple steps: 1) declutter, 2) add a ton of blankets! If it's too warm for heavy comforters, focus on light, breathable layers.
