Home projects as we prepare for warmer weather and more sunshine
7 DIY projects for your home this Spring in Chicago
1. Plant some flowers
Spring is the most popular time to plant flowers, but remember you will need plants that are able to grow in the cold weather without being in danger if a surprise Chicago frost occurs. If you have a home with a front yard, planting some spring annuals such as Weigela, Crocus, Daffodil, Hyacinths, Primrose, Forsythia, Tulips, Pansies and Violas can create beautiful, seasonal curb appeal. If you live in a home without a front yard, such as a condo with a patio or balcony, try some potted plants and flowers such as Purple Rain and Tulips.
2. Painting your home’s exterior (or at least the front door)
After the long, drab winter, it can be nice to give your home's exterior a fresh new look, and a coat of paint goes a long way. Painted exteriors are prone to chipping over time, and can require touch-ups; however occasionally you may be ready for an entirely new look. In either case, set aside a weekend - select a color, and go. Also, remember to check the weather forecast. Clear, sunny days with reasonable temperatures — which are conducive to allowing paint to dry — are the ideal choice.
3. Clean the gutters
Cleaning your gutters is a great spring project. Before you start, make sure you have a good, sturdy, extendable ladder, and always place the ladder on a sturdy surface. There are several ways to get the job done: you can use a leaf blower, a wet/dry vacuum, a power washer or even a garden hose. Be sure to do your research on proper procedures and safety measures before you start your project.
4. Of course there is always spring cleaning
Simple spring cleaning checklist:
- Wash Baseboards, door ceilings, window sills, doors, and walls.
- Vacuum and wash vents.
- Wash window treatments (drapes, etc.).
- Dust blinds.
- Wash Windows - inside and out.
- Dust and shine overhead lights - replace burnt light bulbs.
- Dust and/or vacuum light fixtures and lamp shades.
5. Reface kitchen cabinets
If you are happy with your current kitchen layout, and just want to refresh your home's look, this is a great DIY option. Refacing your kitchen cabinets can give your kitchen a whole new style. You can create a more modern look with colors and textures. It can be a bit tricky though, so make sure you do some research before you start. Stores such as Home Depot sell refacing kits that you may want to check out; and of course there are many resources online.
6. Organize your garage
For some reason, throughout winter, we tend to store things in our garages. Once spring rolls around, we naturally want to clean and organize it. Depending on how much you have in your garage, and how large it is, there are several ways to approach this project. You may want to consider some wire shelving and storage bins. Consider stacking the bins vertically, as it will save you room. Looking for tips on cleaning your garage floor? Go to https://simplegreen.com/cleaning-tips/rooms/garage/flooring/
